Stretching from April to October, Greece has an glorious summer season that promises long, hot and dry days. The temperatures peak in July and August with the mercury consistency hovering around the mid-30s. Even at the either end of the season, you should expect hot and dry days in the late 20 degree range.
Greece is famous for its warm welcome and relaxed disposition. You'll enjoy the hospitality of the fun-loving Greeks, who are always pleased to see you. Our skippers are typically local Greeks who are more than proud to show you around their country. They'll introduce you to friends and reveal hidden secrets that are otherwise undiscovered by 'mere mortals'.
From moussaka to souvlaki, and soutzoukakia to the eponymous Greek salad, you'll delight in the wonderful cuisine of Greece. Enjoy the fresh taste of Greek gastronomy in the many authentic tavernas you'll discover throughout your holiday. Don't forget to wash it down with a lovely chilled Greek wine or cold Greek beer too!
The most balanced sailing area in Greece. The Saronic Islands have a perfect mix of lovely sailing winds, quiet bays, lively villages, friendly tavernas and great value. This area, which includes the Argolic and Saronic Gulf, is an interesting, diverse and authentically Greek area for all sailors, including families, older and younger groups and couples. Athens is an interesting launch pad with a wide range of quality boats and catamarans.
Located off the western coast of Greece, the Ionian is a wonderfully gentle sailing area that many sailors, particularly the British, have made their second home for decades now. Stretching from Corfu to Zakynthos, an Ionian Islands yacht charter is characterised by light winds, a green coastline, short sailing legs, small villages, authentic quayside tavernas and a generally relaxed disposition.
Blue domed roofs, sandy beaches and winds with a bite, the Cyclades Islands are stunning. See a postcard of Greece and it will inevitably boast the blue domed roofs of Santorini or the iconic windmills of Mykonos. Gorgeous sandy beaches, wonderful traditional architecture, stunning landscapes & fascinating ancient history litter its many gorgeous & idyllic islands.
The Dodecanese are a diverse group of 12 main islands and numerous small islets, nestled along the Turkish coast in the south-eastern Aegean. Sailing here offers the opportunity to enjoy the liveliness of Kos and Rhodes and then the greater thrill of sailing away to enjoy the peaceful, unspoilt and diverse outer islands. It is with these smaller islands that you’ll fall in love, enjoy their sandy beaches, warm waters, rich history, enchanting character, traditional tavernas, Venetian architecture, Byzantine churches and medieval castles.
The Sporades Islands are located in the Aegean Sea north of Athens. They’re renowned for sandy beaches, lively sailing, secluded bays and as the stunning backdrop to the movie ‘Mamma Mia’. You’ll also find well preserved nature reserves and might even be lucky enough to spot the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal.
Greece is world renown for it’s amazing nightlife and within Greece there can be only one winner for the ‘best nightlife’ accolade – The Cyclades Islands! Boasting two apres-sailing heavyweights in Mykonos and Santorini, you’ll also find a thriving outdoor scene in Ios, Naxos and Paros.
The favorite destination for young families in Greece is typically the Ionian Islands, due to the short sailing legs and gentle wind conditions. However, if your kids are teenagers, you may wish to consider the Saronic Islands as they have a bit more ‘onshore action’ for after dark!
With its gentle winds and calm seas, the Ionian Islands is our pick for the best area in Greece for novices. You’ll also benefit from short sailing legs and a huge variety of sights and experiences within a relatively confined area.
The most popular destination in Greece is a two-horse race between the Saronic Islands and the Ionian Islands. The Ionian draws people looking for a gentle sailing experience, while the Saronic Islands are well suited to clients looking for more balanced sailing conditions.
From our base on Skiathos Island, you can sail this 24 island archipelago without fear of overcrowding – only four of the islands are permanently inhabited! Enjoy this seclusion on quiet anchorages, cooking your own meals under the stars and falling asleep to the sound of the sea lapping against your hull.
To charter a bareboat yacht in Greece you need to have a valid sailing qualification issued by a recognised authority (e.g. RYA, ASA, IYT, USSA). This qualification should not have any restrictions on daylight hours or a maximum sailing distance from shore. If you have an RYA Day Skipper certificate or similar, for example, you should also obtain the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is accepted. RYA Yacht Master is, of course, accepted.
The national currency in Greece is the Euro. There are plenty of cash machines and bureau de change on the islands so withdrawing money and changing alternative currencies is relatively easy. We recommend you arrive with enough local currency to cover the first couple of days of your holiday. Cards are accepted in supermarkets but most tavernas and local tourist shops tend to prefer cash.
The national language of Greece is Greek! However, English is widely spoken and understood throughout, especially within the service industry, including taverna staff and taxi drivers. All Seamaster partners and crew speak English proficiently.
